was reading this morning, going off the fiscal cliff was a bungee jump. we go over and the markets collapse. it's amazing that's what we have to get to. >> here's what we know. washington only reacts when there is a crisis. jackie is right. the staff is working behind the scenes to get something done. there is no question about it, the president and congressional democrats have the upper hand and speaker baner is weakened by this. he only wants the plan b vote. he was only 20 votes short. those were folks that from an ideological standpoint are against raising any taxes whatsoever. it's less than a week and a half or so, a more mod ralt congress and they hope that the new folks that are coming into the congress will be a little bit more moderate and the process maybe will put something over the top. >> you have seen the stories about the death of the tea party and they don't have it as important as they did. >> they are very vocal. >> they are important when you have a system of government in the house where you have to pass things. the majority itself. the majority of the majority. that wa

is reacting already to this. in fact, i was raiding a report this morning that the fiscal cliff has hit for many businesses because they're having to finalize their payrolls for 2013. what are you hearing to the leaders that you're talking to? >> i call it a curve and i think it's not as big a deal as a lot of other people think because ultimately something is going to happen. and what should happen is no plan b. for plan b to go is crazy. and they should go for the big plan or no plan whatsoever because what's going to happen is taxes will go up and then all of these republicans that signed the so-called pledge are going to be able to reduce taxes, and therefore, they haven't violated their pledge because they'll be reducing taxes. not increasing them. a deal will be made. but it's got to be the right deal. regardless of cliff or curve, it's got to be the right deal. we have to get this country back on track. and it is just so incredible what is taking place. i've been watching this and you've been watching it and been reporting on it very well for years. this isn't just something that

, as jessica said, the oddsmakers are definitely seeing the fiscal cliff happening, us going over the fiscal cliff, but if senate does pass something, that would be the next move, then the house could pretty easily take it up and pass it on sunday night or monday morning, on the actual day of december 31st. i think at this point, it's more of a question of optics, and democrats were definitely trying to take advantage today of the fact that the house republican -- the republican-led house, rather, is not here and won't be here until sunday. we all know that what happens here in washington, is that nothing really happens until they're really up against the deadline. that's why i'm also told by some democrats who really know what the process is going to be, if there is one, that they don't even see this potentially happening, if there is any kind of legislation that goes before december 1331st, until probably that day, december 31st, because the pressure will have to be on to get enough republicans in the house and the senate, to pass this. >> right up to the edge. thank you, dana. thank you,
